Can Boredom Kill?

The Mail Online reports that a study shows that 37 percent of those who complained of being bored were more likely to die during the study timeframe than those who didn’t complain of boredom. How do we know that it wasn’t their outlook (or the complaining),  that was the problem and not the boredom?
